The merchant processed a telephone, mail, or internet order in which the cardholder claims they didn’t authorize or participate.


  • In a card-not-present environment, the merchant processed a transaction using an invalid or stolen account number. 
  • Due to an unclear billing descriptor, the customer believes the transaction is fraudulent.


Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 20 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Request authorization for card-not-present transactions and recurring transactions regardless of the transaction amount.
  • Get verification in the form of a PIN or imprint.
  • Clearly label card-not-present and card-present transactions.
