This reason code is transitioning from legacy code 4812. The issuer couldn’t find the account number used on file.

Cause

It could be:ย 

  • The transaction was completed using a retired account number, and the merchant received authorization approval later.
  • The transaction processed was authorized offline.
  • The account number wasn’t updated on the Electronic Warning Bulletin before the transaction.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 90 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.
Merchants have 45 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

Merchants should:

  • Use EMV chip terminals for transactions.
  • Always get authorization before they process a transaction.
  • If a transaction authorization request is declined, terminate the transaction immediately.
  • Train staff members to follow proper procedures in making payments.
