Cause

  • The merchant processed a random account number and didn’t obtain the owner’s authorization.
  • The merchant processed a transaction the cardholder wasn’t a part of.
  • A family member used the card without the primary cardholder’s knowledge.
  • The cardholder couldn’t recognize the purchase description on the billing statement.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.
Merchants have 45 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Ensure the billing descriptors are easy to recognize.
  • Always get authorization for every transaction.
  • Reject expired cards.
  • Never override a declined transaction.
  • Train your staff on how to handle terminal issues.
