Claim

The cardholder claims the merchant processed a transaction after their payment plan ended or after they had canceled the subscription.

Cause

  • The merchant forgets to cancel the subscription.
  • The merchant completes a transaction after the closure of the cardholder’s account.
  • The merchant increases the charge amount without communicating it to the customer.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 30 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Never increase the charged amount without communicating it to the customer in writing.
  • Avoid premature billings.
  • Send the cardholder notifications of the upcoming transaction.
  • Process a cancellation immediately.
  • Make your cancelation policy easy to understand and readily available.

Notes

The card issuer gets 30 extra days to file a chargeback if they submitted a retrieval request which was completed after the 120 days.
