Claim

The cardholder agrees they’ve transacted with the merchant before but claims they didn’t authorize the particular transaction.

Cause

  • The cardholder doesn't recognize the bill description.
  • The cardholder’s family member made a purchase without their permission with their card.
  • The merchant charged the wrong account number.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 20 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Always get approval for the transaction.
  • Use clear, easy-to-recognize billing descriptors.
  • Employ secondary validation methods like PINs and signatures.
