American Express sent the merchant an inquiry to get more information about a transaction but the merchant didn’t send a reply in good time.

Cause

  • The merchant failed to respond to the inquiry from American Express.
  • The merchant replied to the inquiry but after the 20-day time limit.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have no limit to the number of days they have to to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 20 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Always keep proof you responded to the initial inquiry within the timeframe given.
  • Ensure you can access transaction information easily and fast.
