The cardholder claims they don’t recognize the charge on their statement.


  • The buyer forgot about the transaction.
  • The cardholder’s billing statement is wrong.
  • The merchant uses a billing descriptor that the cardholder fails to associate with their business.
  • Friendly fraud.
  • The customer’s family member used their card without their knowledge.


Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 30 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Have accurate and easily recognizable billing descriptors.
  • Make your return policies easy to understand and access.
  • Use a pre-transaction fraud detection service that’ll verify the cardholder’s identity and deter criminal activity.


The card issuer gets 30 extra days to file a chargeback if they submitted a retrieval request which was completed after the 120 days.
