Claim

The merchant completed a transaction even after the authorization request was declined.

Cause

The merchant:

  • The merchant tries to force, override or force a transaction after a declined authorization request.
  • The merchant fails to obtain authorization.
  • The merchant tries multiple times to charge a card that’s declined.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 30 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • If the card is declined, request the customer for an alternate payment method.
  • Carefully train staff for proper procedures of getting authorization.
