Claim

A merchant responds to a retrieval request with a copy of an illegible sales receipt.

Cause

  • The receipt is illegible due to colored or ribbed paper, fading, or light ink.
  • The original receipt is mishandled, or the scan is too small.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 30 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Make copies or scans of the receipts in their actual sizes.
  • Keep full toner or ink in the machines.
