Claim

The merchant processed a transaction against an unassigned, invalid or incorrect card number.

Cause

  • The merchant processed a transaction against a closed or expired account.
  • The customer or merchant mistyped the card number when entering it for a transaction.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 30 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Get an authorization approval response before you complete a transaction.
  • Double-check data entry before processing transactions.
  • Review details entered by the customer for accuracy.
  • Stop the transaction when the authorization is declined.
