Claim

The merchant didn’t seek authorization for the card transaction.

Cause

The merchant:

  • Didn’t obtain authorization for the transaction.
  • Waited for over a day to request authorization.
  • Obtained authorization for one amount and then added another amount to the transaction before completing the transaction.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 30 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Always get authorization for all transactions.
  • Don’t add gratuities and tips outside the authorized amount.
  • Train the staff on processing transactions with authorization and ensure they follow correct procedures when adding tips.
