Claim

The cardholder possesses a PIN-preferring credit card, but your POS is either not PIN-enabled or allows the shopper to bypass the PIN entry.

Cause

  • The merchant didn’t use a chip-and-PIN compatible terminal or was convinced to bypass the PIN requirement.
  • A fraudster completed the payment.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 30 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Upgrade to EMV-compliant terminals.
  • Acquire the necessary authorization before completing the transaction.
  • Use cardholder verification methods like PINs and signatures for transactions.
  • Train staff on the proper POS procedures.

Notes

The card issuer gets 30 extra days to file a chargeback if they submitted a retrieval request which was completed after the 120 days.
