Claim

Discover is requesting additional information for a card-present transaction a cardholder claims was unauthorized.

Cause

  • The transaction and card signatures don't match.
  • The cardholder claims the transaction was fraudulent.
  • The merchant didn't get transaction authorization.
  • The card imprint isn't legible and lacks the necessary security features.
  • The transaction receipt is illegible.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 30 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Always get transaction authorization.
  • Get imprints or conduct necessary validation, including PIN.
  • Keep a legible copy of the signed transaction receipt and furnish the customer with a copy.
  • Process every card-present transaction using EMV chip readers.
