The cardholder claims the transaction isn’t valid because it was processed after the expiry of their credit card.

Cause

  • The cardholder’s card had expired before the transaction date.
  • The card was valid during the transaction date, but the merchant didn’t process the transaction until after the card’s expiry.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.
Merchants have 30 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Confirm the expiration date on every card.
  • Double-check the card expired card on all card-not-present transactions.
  • Seek authorization.
  • Never force transactions.
