Claim

The merchant didn't seek authorization for the transaction processed.

Cause

It could be the merchant:

  • Didn't seek authorization approval or sought it after processing the transaction.
  • Tried to force the transaction even after receiving an authorization decline.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 90 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 45 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

Merchants should:

  • Always get authorization before they process a transaction.
  • Stop overriding declined transactions.
  • Use EMV-compliant terminals.
