Claim

This reason code is transitioning from the legacy code 4841. The cardholder claims there were unauthorized purchases due to a lack of purchase controls.

Cause

The merchant didn't set up enough purchase controls for a cardholder, and the unauthorized purchase of digital goods of under $25 was processed.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 45 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • The merchant should confirm all purchases through text or email.
  • Get cardholder authentication before processing a purchase.
  • Turn off default purchases and have every cardholder log in to complete a purchase.
  • Every purchase process should time out after a specific period of inactivity.
  • Display the total transaction amount for all pending purchases and obtain cardholder confirmation.
