Claim

Used when a cardholder claims a particular transaction charged as a sale should have been a credit.

Cause

The merchant processing a credit card transaction to give a refund runs it as a regular charge instead of crediting the customer’s account.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 45 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 45 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Immediately reverse erroneous or duplicate transactions or issue credits to cancel it.
  • Double-check calculations and transactions before finalizing them.
  • Train the staff on how to handle credit, debits, and reversal.
