Claim

The customer claims a counterfeit chip card was used, and they were not part of the transaction.

Cause

The cardholder claims the transaction was completed with a counterfeit chip card, and they were not part of the transaction.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 20 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Ensure your terminals are EMV compliant.
  • Use the correct CVM (Cardholder Verification Method). It could be a PIN or signature.
  • Get proper authorization and manual or electronic imprint for each card present transaction.
  • Train your staff to process and handle card-present transactions properly.
