Claim

The cardholder claims you processed a stolen or used a PIN preferring chip card on a terminal that wasn’t EMV PIN compliant.

Cause

In the card present transaction, the merchant:

  • Didn’t use a chip reading terminal.
  • Used a chip reading terminal that wasn’t PIN compliant.
  • The chip transaction was authorized without complete chip data.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 20 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Use EMV PIN compliant terminals.
  • Use the correct CVM (Cardholder Verification Method). It could be a PIN or signature.
  • Get proper authorization and manual or electronic imprint for each card present transaction.
  • Train your staff to process and handle card-present transactions properly.
