Claim

The cardholder claims they did not authorize or participate in an unattended or key-entered card transaction.

Cause

The merchant didn’t:

  • Ensure the card was read and the chip was read.
  • Get a manual card account imprint for the key-entered transaction.
  • Label a card-not-present transaction as either phone/mail or internet order.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 20 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Ensure card-present transactions are magnetic stripe read or chip-read.
  • If you cannot read the chip or swipe the card, always create a manual card imprint.
  • Always differentiate between card-not-present and card-present transactions.
