Claim

The receiving merchant processed a transaction without obtaining authorization, or they sought authorization after processing the transaction.

Cause

  • The merchant didn’t obtain authorization to process the transaction.
  • The merchant obtained authorization for one transaction amount and then processed a higher amount.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 75 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 20 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Always authorize Visa transactions according to their rules.
  • Get authorization within an acceptable time limit.
  • Train the staff on the correct procedures for handling terminal problems.
