Processing Error


The cardholder claims that the same transaction was processed multiple times.


The merchant:

  • Entered the same transaction multiple times into the terminal.
  • Electronically sent the transaction capture batch to the card processor multiple times.
  • Deposited the acquirer and merchant copy of the transaction receipt.
  • Created two or more transaction receipts for one purchase.


Cardholders and issuers have 120 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.

Merchants have 20 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

  • Avoid keying in the transaction twice. If you make this mistake, credit the other transaction entries except the original.
  • Review your transactions receipts before depositing them.
  • Train your sales team on the correct procedure for processing a transaction. Include training on crediting duplicate transactions.
