In contrast, stand-in processing offers backup authorization to issuers when their main authorization systems cannot respond to authorization requests.

Cause

  • The merchant swiped the card over and over to obtain authorization despite an initially declined response.
  • The merchant used alternative authorization methods like voice authorization or key entering.

Response

Cardholders and issuers have 90 days to file a dispute related to the claim against the merchant.
Merchants have 45 days to respond to the claim in dispute.

Steps to Prevention

Merchants should:

  • Always seek authorization approval before you process a transaction.
  • Terminate a transaction after receiving a declined response and get a different form of payment.
  • Stick to Mastercard rules.
